No New Taxes!!!

July 03, 2012

Library Board votes to not pursue renewal of tax millage in 2013.

During the regular meeting of the DeSoto Parish Library Board of Control, the Board agreed to not pursue an election for renewal of the 10-year millage tax in 2013. They deemed the current income from sales tax would be sufficient to operate the library system. Administrative Assistant Bill Smith stated that the millage tax will expire this tax year and, in order to continue the millage, it would have to be placed on a ballot for the taxpayer’s vote. Board member Katherine Freeman moved, with a second from Board member Leon W. Hunt, to not pursue the renewal. The motion was carried unanimously. Smith further stated that due to reassessment, property values have gone down. There has been a legislative roll-up that places our millage rate at 3.5. He then read the resolution and affidavit and polled the board members with 5 yeas, 0 nays and no abstentions, thus setting the rate at 3.5 for the rest of this tax year. Three board members were not present to vote.
